Children’s Mercy and Kohl’s Announce New Program

Kansas City, Mo (August 26, 2010) – Children’s Mercy Hospitals and Clinics and Kohl’s Department Stores announce the Children’s Mercy Strong, Talented, And Resilient Kids Power Program.

The program is designed to empower children with tools for success that can be utilized throughout the school year and beyond. Kansas City metro area children, parents, community leaders and others will be introduced to the Kohl’s and Children’s Mercy S.T.A.R. power program which will kick off this fall in area schools. The program will have curriculum focused on four key areas including: body image and self esteem, relaxation and stress relief, healthy eating, and movement and exercise. Research has shown that placing an emphasis on these topics with school-aged children leads to a healthier, more active, adolescent and adult lifestyle and often helps to curb poor choices.

The program is made possible with a $259,303 grant from Kohl’s. The grant also supported the Children’s Mercy Back-to-School Backpack Give-a-way Day on Saturday, August 21, at Kohl’s Department Store, 8500 North Madison Ave Kansas City, MO. The event provided 1,000 backpacks to Kansas City area children, which helped ease that transition from summer to fall and gave kids “tools for school.”

Kohl's Department Store, through the Kohl's Cares cause merchandise program, made the donation possible. The donations were collected from Kohl’s stores located in the Kansas City area. Kohl’s has gifted more than $1 million to Children’s Mercy over the past 10 years.

Kohl's commitment to Children’s Mercy is made possible through the Kohl's Cares cause merchandise program. Through this initiative, Kohl’s sells $5 books and plush toys with100 percent of net profit benefiting children’s health and education programs nationwide, including hospital partnerships like this one. Kohl's has raised more than $150 million dollars through this merchandise program. In addition, Kohl's Cares features a scholarship program, which recognizes more than 2,100 young volunteers with a total of $410,000 in scholarships and prizes this year; the Associates in Action program, which encourages associate volunteerism and provided more than $10 million in grants to youth-focused nonprofit organizations last year alone; and fundraising gift cards for schools and youth-serving organizations.
